The Erhu Fiddle

While I was in China this past Christmas I had the opportunity to meet Wang Zhulin, or Medea as she says in English.  Medea is a graduate engineering PHD student in Tian Jin, China who has all sorts of goals in that field, but she also plays the Chinese fiddle or the erhu fiddle.  This instrument has only two strings and the bow goes in between those two strings.  I was super impressed and shocked at the sound that can come out of that fiddle.  This song is called "Zhán Ma Ben Téng" or "Galloping Horse in Battle."  If you listen closely you can hear some of the sounds a horse makes being made by the fiddle.  I shot this really quick, I was more interested in the audio and the video was a second thought but I think it turned out ok for a one take shoot.  It was shot with my Canon t2i with a 50mm F1.8 lens.  Enjoy!

Here's the fiddling crew.  On the left is Media, then me and then my boom-mic man, though I don't remember his name.  This was a fun 20 minute project.
